SN E 956685 is a Winchester Model 97 Trench gun as built and supplied to a police force or a prison unit. Page 24 of "Winchester Shotguns and Shotshells" by Stadt pictures a similar gun 539 guns removed from this sample. Dated February 24, 1941, our example shows the 97 Winchester barrel marking, cylinder and 2 3/4 chamber marking The barrel is mounted with an early 6 row ventilated handguard that shows the 1918 pattern markings. This piece shows a bright excellent 12 gauge bore. Overall ,the blue remains at 70% with most loss on the base of the barrel and tube at the carry point ahead of the receiver. The wood shows most finish loss on the pump forewood. The butt retains 60% original finish with most loss on the pistol grip. The grip base shows a 2 over 33 issue or rack number. The majority of these late Trench guns were assembled from remnant parts and sold to various state units for use by troopers and prison guard units. This example remains in sound original but used condition. Not a common item on the Canadian market.
