  • Description:

Winchester Model 1876 rifle in caliber 40-60 is serial number 55526 built in 1886.  This example is a third model  with an octagon barrel.  The barrel shows clear crisp markings and a bore that rates very good plus.  The rifling is sharp and strong with scattered black powder light corrosion.  The metal shows an overall brown petina even color with only a few slight spots of very light pitting.  The frame, lever and lifter show an even overall finish with clean screw heads.  The wood is very sound.  The butt stock appears to be a later replacement, showing fewer usage marks than the forewood.  Overall, this Winchester is  a very good example of the less than common 1876 Model (only 63871 built).  This piece was stored for many years under less than perfect condtiions.  It was the storage that created the overall brown finish.  Included with this rifle is a Cody record sheet confirming the above information and the date of September 30, 1886.  This piece will make a very good example of a representative piece in a general Winchester collection.
