  SN 278492 is a Winchester Model 1873 in 44-40 caliber.  This rifle was built in 1888.  This example shows a 24" barrel with a shootable bore described as bright ,very good, with light corrosion and sound rifling.  The barrel shows the Winchester markings with the correct sights.  The action works and functions correctly.  The overall finish is brown grey petina.  The wood is sound and original to the rifle.  The brass lifter shows the 44 caliber marking.  A sound example for the Wincester fan.  This rifle was designed to fire the 44-40 black powder cartridge.  Check with your local gunsmith before you fire 44-40 smokeless cartridges.
