  • Description:

SN 64208 is an example of the scarce (1,008 built) Model 1873 Trapdoor Metcalfe rifle.  Reference see: Flaydermans 9A-395.  Flayderman noted that the serial range was to 74,000.  The majority of the 1,008 rifles were parted out at Springfield, destroyed and or sold as surplus parts to Bannerman's.  Most of the Metcalfe rifles on the market were reassemblied from the parts.  This rifle shows the original parts, lock, lever attachment, etc.  The wood cartridge block is a modern made reproduction.  This piece shows a bright excellent, 45-70 caliber bore.  The rod is a replacment.  The lock show sharp original markings.  The channel in the wood is original as built for the Metcalfe block.  The breech block shows the 1873 date, and U.S. Eagle mark.  There is remnants of case color on the breech block.  The rear sight is correct but missing part of the slide cover.  The metal shows an old cover.  The metal shows an old blued finish with hints of light corrosion marks.  The wood is original showing normal issue and usage martks.  A very scarce Rolling Block considering the number built 1,008, and the survival rate to this date.  Reference pages 48 to 60," The 45-70 Springfield" by Frasca & Hill.
