- Description:
SN 1526799 is a 1903 built in 1938 as per the serial number listing in "The Springfield 1903 Rifles" by William Brophy. This rifle shows a barrel dated 10-25 with the star gauge mark on the muzzle- see page 207 of aforesaid book. This model is mounted with a Model 1922 Sporter type stock which was available from the ordnance dept via DCM, page 214. The book references indicate that 29 sporters were built in 1938 with a total of 4,946 sporters built. This example shows the correct blued finish and polished bolt as built. At some point in time a prior owner had a scope mounted as evidenced by the 4 screws on the receiver ring and barrel. This a relatively scarce variation of the Springfield rifle. It shows a bright excellent 30-06 barrel. If this item had not been drilled for the scope it would be far more valuable. For further reference see Sprinfield armory section of the Blue Book of Gun Values.
