  • Description:

NSN is a Remington No 5 military carbine Model 1897.  This example shows a 20 1/2" barrel with a bright excellent bore.  There are no caliber markings as were the majority of the Remington contract  mlitary rifles and carbines.  There is a #11173 on the bottom of the top tang which are not serial numbers.  These are castings or lot numbers as per George Layman "Remingon Rolling Block Rifles".  This example shows the earlier tang markings for the model 1897 ending with the March 18th 1874 date.  This carbine appears to be chambered for the 11MM (43 Spanish Remington cartridge) reloadable round.  This carbine was probably one of the Rolling Block sold to one of the 4 Latin America countries (1899-1903).  Between 1899 and 1903, Mexico, Honduras, Argentina and Uruguay were customers for the Rolling Block Remingtons.  This example shows overall grey metal with minor corrosion.  The wood is original with normal military usage marks.  The action is tight and sound.  One of the Remington carbines that appears to be far scarcer on the Canadian market.
