- Description:
We are selling this item on behalf of a good friend who passed away. This item was sold to him by a very unscrupulous dealer and restorer. We offer this item with full description of work done prior to our friend's purchase. This piece is a 50" flint lock, as is a great decoration but not a collectable antique. The barrel was re-converted to flint and the lock is of a modern manufacturer, coloured and worked to look old. The casting lines are still visible on the interior. The butt has been extended with added wood and shaped to fit the plate. The wood has been repaired using plastic wood in the wrist area, tang and lock recess. The forwood was completely rebuilt using the same material which over flowed into the barrel channel. Our gunsmith spent hours getting the lock to function and improve the appearance to make a nice decoration piece. The estate valued this item at $5,000 probably related to the cost of the thing. Despite the above, this piece still makes a nice unique Quebec flint lock display that is approximately 200 years old.
