- Caliber/Gauge: .30-06
- Description:
SN 59887 is a M1 Garand built by Springfield in August of 1940. This is a very early production M1 considering that there were approximately 50,000 of the Garands built in the gas trap configuration. The front sight shows that this rifle was one of the early "gas port" M1 rifles ( see pg. 55 of "The Complete Guide to the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine" by Canfield.) As with the majority of M1 Garand rifles, this example was rebuilt after WW2. The rifle shows a barrel built by Springfield dated 1951. The bore rates at bright, excellent plus. The action and interior parts remain as new and all appear to be Springfield. The butt stock shows a RA stamp on the left side, for the Raritan Arsenal in New Jersey. This mark indicates this early Garand was overhauled at this arsenal some point in 1951 as per table #8 pg 154. The rifle overhauled remains very collectable. ( aforesaid reference ) . This is a very scarce M1 Garand rifle built prior to attack on Pearl Harbor and in condition seldom encountered. Non-restricted.
