  • Description:

SN A8860 is a Boer purchased and used Mauser Model 1896.  This rifle shows the name D.J. LeRoux carved in the butt on the right side, dated "15/12/99".  The date is significant as it as the date of the battle of Colenso, Natal, South Africa  with the British losing 143 killed 756 wounded and 220 captured.  The Boers had 8 killed and 30 wounded.  This rifle most likely saw service in the battle.  The piece shows all matching numbers and a bright very good bore. This rifle shows overall usage marks and most importantly the Boer trooper name and date the Colenso battle in the Orange Free State.  The serial number was one of the ZAR purchased rifles.  The first purchase was for 10,000 Ludwig Loene Mauser in 1896.  The rareity factor of this rifle is not the name of the Boer but the date of Battle of Colenso, which was one of the Boer's most significant vicktories of the war.  Also the fact that it has the matching bolt is quite unusual.  An excellent example.
