- Description:
We are pleased to offer an exceptional pair of British cannons that were issued for the protection of colonial Newfoundland. This identical pair of guns remain in above average condition. The pair appear to have been cast by the Scottish firm Carron Co. of Leigh, Edinburgh. The barrels show a length of 54" , a 9" base, a bore measuring 3" and no muzzle ring. Both pieces are mounted on carriages that appear to be mostly original with partial rebuilds. The carriages are mounted on four 9 1/2" iron wheels while the carriage fittings appear to be original. This pair probably were issued by and used by the Royal Navy up to the early 1800's. At some point in time the guns were sent to colonial Newfoundland. The only marking on this pair is a cask crown approximately 18" from the forward breach. A review of internet shows many Newfoundland historical sights with similar cannons. The owner of this identical pair acquired them in 1977. We are offering this pair on behalf of the late owner's estate. The most unusual part is the condition, there is no evidence of any restoration, sand blasting or repair. It is very difficult to acquire a cannon and carriage in such desirable condition but to find a matched pair almost impossible. This item is sold as a matched pair only. All shipping arrangement remain with the purchaser. Our company has had and still owns numerous other cannon but this is the first matched pair we have encountered. A rare special pair for the collector or an attraction for a unique piece of real estate.
