  • Description:

2798 A is one of the relatively scarce Lee Enfield carbines.  This cavalry MK 1 is one of only 13, 926 built.  The MK 1 is far scarcer than the MK1*  This carbine was fitted with the clearing rod which was abolished in May of 1899.  It was at this time that the MK 1* was introduced without the provision for the rod.  It may also be noted that in 1898-1899 the leather backsite covers were not fitted.  This example shows a very good bore with corrosion in the grooves and sound rifling. It also has the original broad arrow and inspector marked rod, bolt cover and 85% original blue.  The wood shows normal dings and marks asociated with service usage and probably used by one of the British Cavalry units in the Boer War.  This carbine is not one of the 2200 built for Canada but one of the British issued pieces.  This is one of the scarcer carbines.  The scarceness of the Mark 1 carbines is excellerated by the fact that a large number of them were converted to the R.I.C. configeration in the 1900-1904 era.  An item for the British Military or Lee Enfield Collector.
