- Description:
British issue Brown Bess flint lock musket. This example shows a clear sharp ordnance mark dated 1800. It is also marked with a crown broad arrow dated 1805. This India Pattern type 1 remains in better than average condition. The wood shows original inspection marks and is in overall sound condition. The best reference for this piece is "The Brown Bess" by Goldstein and Mowbry, pages 142 - 151. All original brass fittings appear to be original to the piece. The lockplate is identical to the plate shown on pg. 150 with the exception of the replaced re-enforced cock of the 1809 pattern. The barrel shows remnents of the correct barrel proofs and the crown ordinance inspectors mark on the tang. The bore shows obvious corrosion but the exterior of the barrel remains in above average condition. This musket was sourced out of Ontario many years ago. It may well have been issued in one of the British units that were stationed in Upper Canada prior to the war of 1812. The ram rod is not original but is a modern replacement. The lock is orginal and remains in better than average condition with clear sharp markings. Antique status
