  7831 H serial number was built at Erfurt and is dated 1890. The 7.92 X 57 barrel shows a bright very good bore and matching barrel and receiver. The finish has turned plumb but shows no pitting. The mid band shows German Reg markings B.12 RR.58 This marking was probably one of the supplementary WW1 infantry units. This 88 shows the 05 modifications the charge cut for stripper clips, the thumb clearance cut and the later 1914 dated magazine cover to keep out dirt. The date of this cover would strongly suggest that this rifle like many 88's saw service in WW1 complete with rod. A slightly better than average example for the German. WW1 or bolt action collector.
