- Description:
AN excellent plus example of an 1855 dated 2nd pattern 53 rifle musket. This example shows the 39" barrel with a bright, excellent rifled bore. The nipple and bore show no indication of actual usage. This item shows the 1855 dated lock which would be the date of manufacture. The barrel shows 99% original blue with only markings at the muzzle related to mounting a bayonet. The rod remains in excellent condition showing the inspectors mark. In the 1860's the pattern 1853 rifles were sent to Pimlico to be repaired and assesed. This example shows the Pimlico arsenal marks and dated 1862. The barrel shows 3 ladders of inspection marks. The rifle shows solid barrel bands and springs. Both the metal and wood of this rifle show all Pimilco marks. The stock shows the W.D. Davis stock makers mark. This 2nd pattern 1853 is a very scarce if not rare British rifled musket to have survived in it's excellent original condition. A scarce item for the British military collector.
