  • Description:

All original cased pair of British officer's pistols built by the great Durs Egg (1748-1831) of London.  This pair comes in the original case with original accesories.  The browned barrels show D. Egg London in gold, 65 caliber, 8 1/2" with gold band and touch hole.  The barrels show bright excellent bores.  One shows a little more usage than the other which is relatively a common finding with pairs.  Excellent wood, original rammers, locks and no indication of repairs.  The wood remains sound with only a slight indication of usage while the pair show original engravings on component parts.  Examination would indicate that these were built as duelling pistols and converted to officer's pistols. The case is original  to the pair with original Egg label on cover.  The original green biaze remains in place with only minor loss along edge.  The material in the body of the case is sound and original.  The case contains the original Egg cleaning rod and rag, powder flask, oiler, wad cutter and bullet mould.  Also included is an US built powder measurer added at a later date. Also included is an original letter dated April 20,1918 from a father to a son, which tells the pair of pistols were owned, carried and used by Capt. Thomas Carter (Royal Horse Artillery) during the Peninsular War.  This letter accompaned the pair during acquisition.  Also included is a service statement of Capt. Carter serving between May10, 1804 to July 5, 1827.  We can assume the pistols were owned by the Carter's a military family based in Dublin.  A pair of pistols that comes with unquestionable providence, with paper records far scarcer than the pistols themselves.
