  • Description:

This piece is a variation of a Canadian MKIII Snider Carbine.  This carbine show serial # 2292 on the sight and a partially obliterated 2292 on the bottom of the breech block.  It would appear that this was an intentional attempt to remove the number.  The bore is bright excellent.  The metal finish is all original blue turning dull with clear inspector and proof markings.  The lock plate shows the correct 1871 date and markings.  The wood remains very good to excellent showing the DC mark on the left and an issue or rack #154 on the right.  The cover screws are in place.  The unusual feature of this carbine is what appears to be an armours cut in the wood and the bottom of the breech below the locking latch.  Close examination discloses that this cutting was professionaly executed.  The question remains as to why this work was performed.  The only logical expanation would to be to assist the user to load and unload the carbine while wearing heavy gauntlets or gloves.  This might suggest usage in winter conditions as faced by the members of the NWMP.  This carbine is not on the limited list of Mountie carbines by Don Klancher "Arms and Accoutrements of the Mounted Police 1873-1973" at page 182,listing 125 of the 300 plus Snider carbine as acquired by the NWMP.  This Snider does however fall into the range of serial numbers as noted 2244-2329.  Obviously we are not stating as fact that this piece is a NWMP carbine.  We are only suggesting tht further research may clarify the connection.  If any of our viewers have seen a similar modified carbine we would appreciate hearing from you.  It is an interesting Canadian carbine that remains in its as found condition.
