  • Description:

SN 935240 is a Colt 1911 A1 pistol as acquired by Canada in 1943.  This Colt is ,in our opinion, one of the scarcest and most desireable Canadian ,military handguns.  For reference see page 51 & 52 of "Canadian Military Handguns 1855 to 1895" by the late Clive M. Law. There were numerous 1911 A1 pistols ordered by Canada in the dark days of 1942.  Very few were ever delivered .  The best evidence indicates that only 1515 were actually delivered and that these came from a shipment to Springfield Armories on May/24 1942. It is believed that very few of these pistols were issued in Canada and that the majority were forwarded to Britain.  The majority of the surviving examples are found with British military and or Birmingham proofs. This example shows 99% original Parkerized finish and no British proofs.  The Canadian C broad arrow proof is located on the left side  at the rear of the slide, on the frame below the inspectors mark and on the base of the magazine.  All markings are very clear and crisp with a dye skip in the center of the slide inscription.  The finish show the hardened front end of the slide (darker nose). The barrel shows 95% of its Colt original blue.  This piece is a part of a Quebec collection from the 1970's and may have come from the small group of Colts sold by Crown Assets in 1959. All were in the serial range 927000 to 940,000.  The above reference, at page 113, lists the serial numbers of 11 Canadian 1911-A1 pistols including one very close to this example SN 935296. A scarce Canadian military pistol that is being offered for sale for the first time since the 1970's.
