- Description:
Antique Pattern 1759 musket with lock built and marked on the reverse WG (William Grice) and showing the inspector's mark crown over 2. Reference see "The Brown Bess" by Goldstein and Stuart Mowbray ,page 91. The lock was original to the musket but was found with overall corrosion etc. The tail of the lock shows the Grice name and remnants of a date 17--. The back of the side plate shows a T/triangle marking??. The barrel measures 41 1/2", if shorted it occured at time of use based on the corrosion at face of the muzzle. The left side of the butt shows traces of the original markings that were intentionally defaced. The lock plate shows remnants of a date that would be from the later part of 1750's or early 1760's. The prior owner advised that this musket came with distant relatives that settled in southern Nova Scotia when they left New England at end of the revolution. A relatively scarce Brown Bess. Note: When acquired there were various marks and breaks in the wood. These were repaired and the wood refinished.
