  SN 8587 on the middle band of a Belgian Infantry musket that was a copy of the French M 1857.  This musket shows an old crude carved initials R X A X T cut in on the right side of the stock.  The barrel is 40" showing little if any rifling remaining.  The barrel shows excessive pitting, mankins proofs eligible.  This musket was either partially buried or exposed to the elements for an extended period of time .  The best reference is" European Arms In The Civil War" by Schualm and Hufmann, pages 179-182.  The carved stock is typical of many Confederate items.  Antique wall hanger.
