- Caliber/Gauge: .280
- Description:
Ross stalking pattern rifle. SN 6751 shows a 24" barrel in 280 Ross caliber with a bright excellent bore. For reference see "The Ross Rifle Story" . As with several other examples in the above reference this rifle was set up and probably retailed by Alex Martin of Glasgow. This piece has a less common 24" barrel, the LOP is 12 1/2" suggesting it was set up for a person of small stature or quite possibly used in the North over heavy clothing. The checkered butt plate is identical to the one shown on page 154. The stock is very similar tot he one shown in plate 86A. The scope is a German Ziel-Dialyt 2 3/4 power. By serial number this rifle was built prior to the start of WW1.The barrel shows the commercial English proofing, the 280 caliber markings and the removed rear sight base. This rifle is typical of rifles that were set up by the English and Scottish gunmakers in the era from 1908 to the start of WW1. Martin was mostly known for Sniper configurations but also built sporters as we have witnessed them over the years.
