  • Description:

SN680 is an unusual 98 Mauser sporting rifle.  This rifle shows a 22 1/2" sporting barrel mounted with a ramp front and flip up 2 position rear sight.  This rifle appears to be chambered in 8 X 57J.  This cartridge feeds and chambers perfectly.  Unfortunately, the rifle is not caliber marked and can only be confirmed by a chamber casting.  This rifle shows a bright excellent bore and is date marked 45.  The receiver is marked Germany and shows the West German definitive proof. The rifle was built using a 98 action and Mauser bolt which is matching to all the parts numbered 680.  The style of this rifle is that of the earlier 20th Century German sporting rifle from 1945 to the creation of West Germany in 1949.  There was very little, if any gunmaking under the control of the allied occupation. Our conclusion is that this rifle was built very soon after the creation of West Germany.  An excellent example of a light weight sporting rifle which is 6.2 lbs.  The stock is European walnut showing two veneer high grade walnut panels.  The receiver shows a stipled panel on the reciever ring and light engraved borders.  An excellent example of German gunmaking from the 1950's.
