  • Description:

An interesting and less common variation of British Military 1842  musket: Reference:"  The English Connection"  Pritchard et all.  The lock on this musket is dated 1850 showing the crown V-R and broad arrow marks.  The balance of probability is that this musket was one of the weapons as acquired by the Confederates.  Reference page 136 of aforesaid work.  The 39" barrel shows the barrel proofs obliterated and the S surplus mark on the left side of the breech shows the oval 1 & 5/8" stamping of the London firm of F Barnes & Co., Fenchchurch St., London.  The barrel shows a corroded rifled bore typical of the confederate acquired muskets. This firm,F. Barnes & Co., was one of the known firms that sold arms and equipment to the American and African market.  (1825-1904). Reference page 15.  This firm sold arms and various materials.  This musket retains British military markings on the metal and wood.  This apparently was not uncommon as noted with numerous surplused weapons that were in Confederate service.  See chapter 3. Apparently the British government had no concerns once the arms were struck of as surplus.  This example shows all the indications of extended usage.  This musket remains in mechanically sound condition despite the overall pitting on the barrel.  This musket was sourced out of New England many years ago and may well be a Confederate bring back from the Civil War.
