  • Description:

SN 5343 is a Snider MK III carbine.  This piece shows the serial number on the sight and breech block.  This example shows a bright very good to excellent bore, strong original finish and is mechanically sound with a tight action.  This carbine is two carbines removed from SN 5341 found on the partial list of carbines on page 182 of "Arms & Accoutrements of the Mounted Police".  This compiled list shows 77 serial numbers out of the total issue of 352 carbines.  it is our opinion that this piece is one of the 275 remaining carbines.  In addition, this example does not show a DC marking for an issue gun to the Canadian Militia.  The butt tang is marked C over 19.  We believe that this is a NWMP applied stamping and probably indicates C troop carbine issue #19.  We note that the C over stamps the military inspection markings.  It would be very uncommon for a military unit to mark in this manner.  The above information is our opinion only.  We can further note that SN 5341 was located at Fort Walsh (W) mark.  The left side of the butt adjoining the plate shows the remnants of an old removed marking.  If any reader of this description has any further information relating to the unlisted 275 carbines, please contact us.
