Snider Short Rifle Tower With Bayonet Lug

  • Licensing Category: Antique
  • Maker: Enfield
  • Model: Snider
  • Caliber/Gauge: .577

  • Description:

An unusual variation of the short Snider rifle.  This is a commercial English built Snider 2 band rifle, built for foreign sale.  The most unusual feature of this rifle is the factory fitted bayonet lug which appears to accomodate a Brunswick bayonet.  The piece shows the 25 and the commerical proofs.  The lock shows crown, tower over 1873 date.  The bore rates very good, bright with sound rifling and scatter corrosion spots and stains.  This London proofed Snider is built to English standards.  There are no foreign markings .  It might be suggested that this piece was built for a militia or private army that had a stock pile of Brunswick bayonets that they wished to retain.  Further research may disclose the end user of this item.  We have handled or observed multiple Sniders over the years and cannot recall seeing a similar example.
