SN C41360 is an antique Sharps New Model Carbine.  This model was built for two years 1865-1866, caliber 52.  This carbine is one of the 31,098 carbines converted from percussion to metallic cartridge breechloaders.  This example retains the original 6 groove barrel Reference: see page 171 Flaydermans Guide 5F-030.  This carbine shows the scarcer marking "New Model 1865".  This carbine is mechanically very sound with a bright very good plus 50-70 caliber bore.  The left side of the breech shows M118 mark R.S.L. (Richard S. Lawrence Superintendent) Unit 1872.  The ladder portion of the rear sight was broken or removed at some point in time.  Replacements occasionally come to the market. All of this model were totally refinished by the Sharps factory if the stocks were in poor condition. They were replaced with a non patchbox butt. The carbine shows at least 5 markings of A.G.W. This was obviously a former owner's initials to prove it was his carbien in case of theft. The forestock shows 2 brass plates to secure a small crack in the base of the forewood. An excellent example of the 1865 conversion Sharps. Antique status. No permit required to acquire or own.
