  • Description:

A very nice example of a Pattern 1856 Volunteer Cavalry Carbine built by Issac Hollis for New South Wales Yeomanry Cavalry.  This carbine is shown on page 84 of "Australian Service Longarms" by Ian Skennerton.  This carbine shows a 577 caliber, 20" rifled barrel, a captive rammer, and a 3 position rear sight.  The bore of this example rates at bright excellent with slight corrossion.  The brass trigger guard shows the N.S.W.  ownership marking.  The lock plate shows the Hollis name and some makers promotion with "Makers to Her Majesty's War Department".  The metal shows a smooth plum barrel.  The lock is sound and crisp.  All of the components of this carbine appear to be original as manufactured and issued.  The wood remains in very good plus condition.  The right side of the butt shows a broad arrow over a partially struck off GS (Government stores) over an inventory # 12010. The GS was probably partially struck off at the time of the surplus sale of the carbine. Note, the butt also shows the name J. Aston Armourer Hythe (County Kent England). Aston was an agent for the Tasmanian Government to act as an inspector for the arms as acquired.  Many weapons were acquired for use in Australia for the numberous units.  This carbine is less than common and will make a nice addition to any British collection.
