- Description:
This rifle is a Model 1851/67 with the Milbank -Amsler conversion to 41 Swiss cartridge. The lock shows the name of Vannod who was Jean Francois of Lausanne (1802-1884). The examiniation of this rifle may indicate that this rifle may well have been on built from scratch with the Milbank-Amsler action. The action is marked T.H. Klaus who was Theo Klaus (1868-1890) in Geneva. He is described as a military manufacturer and converter of weapons to the Milbank -Amsler cartridge system. The sharpshooter shows a 30 1/2" barrel, with an excellent multi groove bore. The barrel retains the socket for the appropriate bayonet for this rifle. The barrel shows a Damascus pattern and a strong remaining original brown finish. The stock is the correct pattern but appears to be a much higher grade of burled wood than the standard rifle. In addition, the emblishment on the lock and tang would suggest that this rifle was built by these makers for a specific customer. An excellent example of a higher grade 1851/67 sharpshooter rifle.
