• Description:

  SN N1879 is one of the Savage/Stevens built No 4 Rifles that ended up in English service.  At some point this rifle was issued for naval service.  The left socket show the N navy mark. The serial numbers were changed to N 1879 on the bolt, barrel and rifle breech.  The socket, action and front sight were painted with typical naval black enamel paint.  This change probably occured when the gun was transferred from regular stores to late or post war navy service.  Various small parts and the barrel show various British proofs.  This Enfield shows a bright excellent bore, matching bolt and the U.S. property marking intact.  The wood is sound and matching in color, showing only normal service usage.  An excellent example for the Enfield person.
