  • Description:

SAN 229 is a Martini-Metford converted cavalry carbine converted to 303.  A scarce example in rarely found condition.  Marked on the right of the receiver Enfield 1887 1.C.1. and on the left VR H.R.B.Co, 1892 MM 303 1*.  This piece shows a bright excellent bore.  The original blue rates at approximately 98% with clear crisp markings.  The wood shows all of its' original finish with crisp markings and only slight storage or handling marks.  This piece is mounted with its' original leather sight cover and rod.  The lever shows finish related to heat treatment. The left receiver is marked H.R.B.CO which was the Henry Rifle barrel Co (1870-1878) a supplier of actions, barrels and conversions .  The Metford conversions are much scarcer than the Martini-Enfields. The right side of the butt shows a rondel Birmingham 1896 and the brass disk with 1896 unit markings 1/Y.H. 343 for the Yorkshire Hussars. This example is one of the best examples of a Martini carbine that we have encountered.  This piece is an exceptional example for any Martini or British military collection.
